Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Research (Development).

Jul 17 2023, 12-1pm EST.

In 2017 the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program required all institutions with five or more chair allocations to develop an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) action plan with impactful objectives that enable progress towards addressing the disadvantages experienced by individuals from the federally-designated groups (Women and gender minorities, Indigenous Peoples, Persons with Disabilities and Members of Racialized Minorities). Simon Fraser University’s EDI Action Plan identified the need to build practices and processes to sustain or improve diversity among CRC chairholders and applicants, including training resources for all faculty and CRC search committees. At the same time, the Canadian research funding landscape has witnessed a shift in evaluation criteria to include EDI considerations with increasing levels of sophistication. In 2020 the CRC Program established $50,000 stipends to advance institutional EDI Action Plan goals. At SFU these funds were used towards developing a custom-tailored EDI training module to help ensure procedural fairness, improve chairholder diversity and develop EDI competencies in our Faculty. Join me in this session, where I will share our experience, challenges, strategies to overcome them, and the ramifications of delivering on this deceptively simple project. From identifying EDI experts to advise on module contents, to building capacity in research support staff to advise grant applicants on EDI considerations, this project was central in research development and provided us with a strong connection to the evolving ecosystem of EDI initiatives across campus.

Presented by: Javier Tavitas

I have been in roles related to the planning and development of successful research grant applications and the growth of research and innovation capacity at Canadian Universities since 2014. Currently Associate Director of Research Development at Simon Fraser University in BC, I oversee the pre-award process lifecycle for major national and international research funding programs, from the identification of opportunities and researchers to the creation and implementation of development support processes, to increase research capacity and income. I facilitate the development of complex research funding applications in strategic priority areas for SFU and serve as the Equity in Research Lead, advising on strategy and initiatives to achieve a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive research environment.
