Evolving EDI support for STEM Researchers.
Dec 8 2023, 12-1pm EST.

Effectively writing about concrete actions to advance equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is increasingly essential in funding applications. In STEM fields in particular, researchers are required to describe how they will implement EDI in their research practice and research design. This session will include overviews and examples of past workshops offered at UBC Okanagan on EDI in research, highlighting the evolving nature of the EDI landscape in Canada. The target audience for this presentation is research administrators who want to learn more about how to support grant applications that require concrete actions to advance EDI. Denise will provide an overview of grant-specific workshops designed to help researchers write effectively about EDI, focusing on NSERC Discovery & Alliance grants. She will also describe strategies to support researchers in identifying challenges and barriers that are specific to their field and institution.

Presented by: Denise Maines

I have been living, working and playing on the unceded, traditional, and ancestral territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation for the past four years. I grew up in traditional lands of the Katzie, Kwantlen, Matsqui, and Semiahmoo First Nations (Langley) before moving to Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) to study History, followed by three years in the UK. I have held several research administration positions over the past decade, and I joined the Office of Research Services at UBC Okanagan shortly after moving to the Syilx territory. Both a research facilitator and research administrator, I support the development of new research projects, grant applications, and partnerships, and provide expert advice on granting agency guidelines and University policy. I am also currently the VPRI team lead for advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in research.
