Developing a Project Management Approach for Research: Circles of Support at the Individual, Departmental, and Institutional Levels

Developing a Project Management Approach for Research: Circles of Support at the Individual, Departmental, and Institutional Levels.
Oct 12 2023, 12-1pm EST.

More and more research institutions are hiring project managers, while funders are increasingly requesting project management be a component of research projects. However, what is meant by “project management” can often feel fuzzy and subjective within the context of research institutions. During this session, Kimberly Sivak will walk attendees through some circles of support SFU has put in place for project management at the departmental and institutional levels and that can be replicated elsewhere. She will also address how individuals can have a project management mindset when working on research projects regardless of departmental and institutional support. This session will cover: • Individual PM Support: Strengthening one’s project management mindset and approach • Departmental PM Support: Understanding SFU’s centralized research project management model and how it could be replicated • Institution-wide PM Support: Learning about SFU’s staff-organized Project Management Community of Practice, which provides support to all project managers and aspiring project managers throughout the institution Ultimately, this session will help project management feel less like a buzzword and more like a reality. It will also be relevant to all those wishing to develop their understanding of project management and learn how they can connect with others to help grow their project management skills, knowledge, and circles of support.
