In today's economic environment, it is becoming increasingly necessary to demonstrate to funding agencies, governments and community, the demonstrable contributions that researchers are making beyond academia to culture, national security, public policy or service, health, environment, quality of life, etc. However, we often describe research impacts using qualitative methods such as citation counts, journal impact factors and research specific metrics such as the h-index which are not always easily understood by the general public.
Memorial University launched an initiative with the mandate to determine what signifies an academic impact, how to identify these impacts, how to measure them and the best ways to communicate them. The session will review the progress of this initiative, share strategies from other institutions outside of Canada and provide examples of how research development professionals can provide support to academics when they are asked to identify the impact of their work.
