Research conducted in Fraser Health is patient focused and oriented. Research success strongly depends on patient recruitment. To facilitate research subject recruitment, the Fraser Health Executive approved an initiative which focused on the implementation of a “consent to contact and review of medical records†question at time of electronic patient registration for care.
Since February of 2014, at the Jim Pattisson Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, patients are asked by registration staff if they give consent to be contacted by a Fraser Health researcher and have their medical records reviewed. Staff records their verbal consent in the electronic patient registration system, called Meditech.
On May 19th and June 2nd, 2015, the “consent†question appeared during patient registration at the Peace Arch and Royal Columbian Hospitals, respectively. Fraser Health Researchers can access a database of patients who gave consent, review the medical records of patients to confirm for study eligibility, and contact the patients that fit their study eligibility criteria. The research database has to date over 150,000 patients that gave consent.
