There are a number of intellectual property issues involved in research grant agreements and industry contracts, including identifying IP ownership issues in industry collaborations, protecting IP rights in a timely manner, executing material transfer agreements, etc. We will discuss the motivations of private businesses and contrast them with the motivations of universities. The heart of this presentation will be several case studies of IP issues that arise when dealing with governmental agencies and private businesses: limits on publication, insistence on exclusive IP ownership, governmental agency's right to use inventions, etc. We will discuss different approaches to resolving these issues.
1. Understand the types of intellectual property as defined legally
2. Identify when intellectual property issues can arise during industry collaborations and governmental agency research arrangements
3. Equip yourself with tactics for negotiating common pitfalls during industry-university research collaborations
