Teaching is rewarding

Robyn Roscoe, Research Administration Certificate faculty Member

Please tell us about yourself/your background:

I am a project management and administrative leader at Canada's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre at BC Cancer. In my current role, I'm responsible for all management and administration (including project management, finance, HR, admin, procurement, operations, and knowledge translation) for our department of 13 PIs and over 300 personnel. Prior to that, I worked for a research funding agency, a small private testing lab, and a large oil company. I have a BSc from the University of Manitoba and have a PMP designation from PMI. I've been in research or science/technical management and admin for nearly 30 years.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching?

So many things! I enjoy helping people expand their knowledge and skills and seeing students help and learn from each other, and I learn a great deal each semester about the wide range of research activities and research admin roles in Canada.

What other ways do you enjoy contributing to your profession?

I am an active mentor to people in my teams and to others locally and across the country. I find it very rewarding to help someone learn or solve a problem by sharing my own knowledge and experience as a manager and leader.

What do you like best about the Research Administration Certificate?

The RAC provides anyone in research admin (or wanting to be in research admin) with a very complete picture of the roles and works in the profession and the complexities and interconnectedness in the field. This introduction represents a holistic view of the profession and enables better collaborations and career development for research administrators. While there is a lot of material covered and knowledge shared, the time commitment is manageable and the overall cost is low compared to the value in knowledge and connections in the Canadian community.
