What prompted you to enroll in the Research Administration Certificate?
My current job was my entry into the world of research administration. It didn't take too long before I began to see the depth and breadth of this profession. There is such a wide range of roles and skillsets needed. I was also looking for a professional development opportunity and a way to learn more about research administration. It seemed like it would be a good fit.
How have you benefited from the Research Administration Certificate?
The technical knowledge has provided a broader, deeper understanding of the parts of research administration I don't get to see in my role. It has opened up a professional network across the country in a way that would not have been possible otherwise.
How many courses have you completed to date?
I have completed 5 courses and will be starting the 6th (and final) course in another week or so.
What has been helpful to you in balancing your other responsibilities with your studies?
The flexibility to choose the order of the courses and the semester to take the courses was very helpful for me - it allowed me to decide if I could take 2, 1, or none, depending on my workload. The courses are designed so I can work at my own pace and work ahead or catch up if work is going to be (or has been) hectic.
How can fellow CARA members support their peers who are studying while working?
If you know someone who is taking a course, take some time to talk with them about it. Ask them what are some of the topics they are covering in their course. Ask them what they are learning that they didn't know (or know well) before the course. Ask them what their assignments are. Ask them if they need any help with their assignments (e.g. talk an assignment idea through, explain something that may not be making sense to them, how to practically apply something from the course).
Thank you very much, Murray, and best wishes in your last course!
