This course is designed for individuals with at least four years of experience in research management and administration, gained in several of the areas covered by the Certificate Units.

Delivered by CARA, in partnership with ARMA (UK), the Certificate in Research Management is a professional qualification designed to provides individuals with the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate strategic and operational management knowledge, skills and experience.

This Certificate is aimed primarily at individuals with at least four years of experience in research management and administration, gained in several of the areas covered by the Certificate Units.

The focus is on self-guided learning and assessment through work-based portfolios and submission of written work based on personal experience and research. There is a requirement to undertake some formal learning via ARMA training or other recognized training providers, and contact time with a Professional Mentor.

A combination of five mandatory and one optional unit will provide students with the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge and skills in generic, pre-award and post-award areas at a strategic operational level. The Certificate in Research Management has been developed by ARMA, in partnership with ATHE, which is a regulated Ofqual awarding organisation.

The Certificate in Research Management will:

  • Support students’ development as effective research managers, benefiting them and their institution.
  • Provide opportunities for students to learn new skills and knowledge and enhance their ability to reflect on and plan improvements in their daily practice.
  • Enable students to expand their knowledge and expertise within their current role.
  • Enable students to gain credit for skills, knowledge and understanding obtained prior to undertaking the qualification as well as for those directly gained through participation in the qualification.
  • Be offered in a format that encourages the broadest level of participation.
  • Be appropriate for both full-time and part-time staff.

Structure

The qualification is designed to enable students to plan the sequence and pace at which they study their chosen units and on achieving of the Certificate of Research Management, students will be able to:

  • Practice effectively within their professional context.
  • Describe, analyse and signpost their professional competence.
  • Take responsibility for their professional learning.
  • Demonstrate an informed awareness of strategic operational issues that affect them, their practice and their institution.

Completion of the qualification is expected to involve up to 180 hours over 18 months:

  • 45 hours of formal learning, including at least 25 hours gained via CARA webinars and national conference and up to 18 hours of contact time with a Professional Mentor. Other Formal Learning might include mentoring, work-shadowing, secondment or peer-support meetings.
  • 135 hours of Self-guided Learning, including reading, research and the preparation of portfolio evidence and written assignments.

This professional qualification requires students to complete six units, including five mandatory and one optional unit.

To meet the requirements of a Unit students can attend CARA webinars and the national CARA conference.

Entry Requirements

This course is designed for individuals with at least four years of experience in research management and administration, gained in several of the areas covered by the units.

Assessment

All Units are assessed via a series of short, written assignments, which are structured to enable students to meet the Unit Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria.

The assignment word count is around 750 words per Unit credit (e.g. circa 2,250 words for a 3-credit unit). Students are strongly encouraged to base their written assignments on real, live examples from their own institution, wherever possible.

Completed assignments are submitted to ARMA(UK) for assessment at two points during the year: 31 March and 30 September. ARMA is managing the assessment process on behalf of CARA and will have responsibility for quality assurance of the qualification, in collaboration with the ATHE.

All assignments will be marked by Assessors, recruited from the CARA membership and CARA associates. All Assessors will have an appropriate background in research management and administration and have been appropriately trained in good assessment practice.

Participation Requirements

Covering a broad range of key topics, the Certificate in Research Management has been designed to help students consolidate the knowledge and skills required to be successful research managers.

In order to undertake the qualification, students will be required to:

  • Identify a Professional Mentor to provide support throughout the qualification (see below)
  • Attend Qualification Induction webinar
  • Attend a minimum of 25 CARA webinars or 19 webinars plus 1 Annual Conference or 13 webinars plus 2 Annual Conferences
  • Undertake other formal learning, such as mentoring, work-shadowing, secondment, peer support, etc.
  • Undertake self-guided learning, to include reading, research and the preparation of written assignments.
  • Complete assessed work for 6 units (5 mandatory and 1 optional), including:
    • a Study Work Plan
    • a Formal Learning Record of what has been learned from the study. 

Professional Mentor 

All students will be required to identify an individual willing to act in the capacity of Professional Mentor, to support the student’s engagement with the qualification. This could be someone from the student’s own institution or a different institution but who is not normally their line manager.

The role of the Professional Mentor is to:

  • Help the student to decide which units they would like to study and when and how they might support their study with workshop attendance, formal and informal learning, as appropriate, so that they can complete their Study Work Plan
  • Act as a sounding board for the student
  • Provide support and encouragement as the student progresses through the qualification

Fees and Pricing

The cost of the Certificate in Research Management consists of the Qualification Fee plus the cost of formal learning, made up of CARA webinars and/or the Annual Conference.

Qualification Fee: $1,450 Canadian Dollars plus tax

The Qualification Fee includes:

  • Registration for 18 months
  • Assessment and Certification of six units

Formal Learning

CARA webinars $90 each (Canadian Dollars plus applicable tax)

CARA National Conference registration

Formal learning (CARA webinars and the CARA National Conference) are charged separately to allow students and their institutions an opportunity to share the costs of professional training and formal assessment and certification.

Registration

Please read the following information before registering:

1. Qualification students must be current CARA members.  If you are not a CARA member and wish to register for the qualification, please Join Us first.

2. Individuals wishing to be accepted onto this qualification should have at least four years of experience in research management and administration, gained in several of the areas covered by the Units.

3. Once you have successfully registered on the course, the CARA administrator will instruct you via e-mail to pay the Qualification Fee based on the Invoice issued by ARMA. Please ensure the spending has been approved before you register.  

4. Qualification Induction will be provided via webinar.

5. Places in this cohort (CRM-CAN2), commencing 1st May 2017 are limited and is now open for booking.

When do I find out what the course requirements are?

A unit handbook will be sent to all students in September.

What are the next steps after I register?

All students will be invited to the Induction Webinar. In September all students will receive a unit handbook. Students may identify their professional mentor at any time. 

Professional Mentors

All students will be required to identify an individual willing to act in the capacity of Professional Mentor, to support the student’s engagement with the qualification. This could be someone from the student’s own institution or a different institution but who is not normally their line manager.

The role of the Professional Mentor is to:

  • Help the student to decide which Units they would like to study and when and how they might support their study with workshop attendance, formal and in Formal Learning, as appropriate, so that they can complete their Study Work Plan;
  • Act as a sounding board for the student;
  • Provide support and encouragement as the student progresses through the qualification.

The Professional Mentor will normally be a research manager or administrator or have a strong background knowledge of the profession and related issues. Students can expect to meet with their Professional Mentor for an average of 2-3 hours per Unit, i.e. one hour per month over two years. Professional Mentors will support no more than two students at any one time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a member of CARA to enroll on a qualification?

Yes.  Membership is available on an individual basis and is open to those with a predominantly management or administrative involvement in research within any discipline, in the private, public and charity sectors, and at all levels of experience.  Find out how to join here.

Which qualification is most relevant to me?

We offer two distinct, separate professional qualifications, each of which is recognized by Ofqual and aligned to the UK’s Qualifications and Credit Framework:

  • The Certificate in Research Administration is aimed primarily at research administrators working in an operational role and looking to expand their knowledge and expertise across the research project lifecycle.
  • The Certificate in Research Management is designed for colleagues with at least four years of experience in research management and administration, gained in several of the areas covered by the Certificate Units, who want to demonstrate their strategic and operational management knowledge, skills and expertise across multiple research projects.

When can I register?

Registration opens twice a year, in February (for 1st May start date) and in June (for 1st October start date).

What are the registration fees?

  • Certificate in Research Administration: $1100 Canadian Dollars +tax
  • Certificate in Research Management: $1450 Canadian Dollars + tax

CARA webinars and the CARA National Conference are charged separately to allow students and their institutions an opportunity to share the costs of professional training and formal assessment and certification. The National Conference registration cost may vary each year.  Webinars cost $90 Canadian Dollars plus tax.

Can the fees be paid in installments?

No, the registration fee must be paid in full in advance of study. Fees for training workshops and webinars can be paid separately, as and when a delegate place is reserved. 

How will I choose the CARA workshops to attend?

Students will be provided with further information to help them identify which CARA webinars and conference sessions underpin each of the qualification Units when they attend the Qualification Induction webinar.

I have attended CARA webinars in the past. Will this count towards my guided learning hours?

You may count one webinar attended in the 12 months prior to registering on the qualification, e.g. since November 2014 if you register in November 2015.

Can I count webinars with free registration toward the certificate?

You may take 1 free webinar during the certificate to count for credit. In addition, volunteers may use their 2 free passes each year. Translation volunteers may use their translation credit for all applicable annual conference and webinar registration.

Can I use the free webinar passes I received for volunteering toward the certificate?

Yes, volunteers may use their passes for webinars and have those webinars count for credit. With 2 free passes each year you could take 4 webinars with the passes plus 1 of CARA’s free webinars and that would leave 13 webinars to pay for to meet program requirements over the 24 months.

Translation volunteers may use their credits towards annual conference registration and webinar registration in support of the certificate.

When would I submit my work for assessment?

Submissions for assessment are taken twice a year on March and September. These will relate to the Units studied in the preceding six months.

Where are the qualifications taught?

These are not taught qualifications. The focus is on self-guided learning and assessment through work-based portfolios and submission of written work based on personal experience and research. There is a requirement to undertake some formal learning via CARA training and contact time with a Professional Mentor.

Who should I ask to be my Professional Mentor?

All students will be required to identify an individual willing to act in the capacity of Professional Mentor.  Your Professional Mentor should ideally be in a research management and administration role, preferably in a university.  It could be someone from your own institution or a different institution, and should be someone who is not normally your line manager. Mentors are available to all CARA members through our Mentorship Program.
