Exploring Researchers' Experiences in Integrating EDI in Research: Insights from a Survey and Engaging in Dialogue

Exploring Researchers' Experiences in Integrating EDI in Research: Insights from a Survey and Engaging in Dialogue.
Nov 13 2024, 12-1PM EST.

This presentation explores the intricate process of integrating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) across diverse research domains, drawing insights from researchers across various disciplines. Funded by the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP), our recent study delves into researchers' experiences with EDI integration, gathering over 200 survey responses to identify barriers hindering meaningful inclusion. This session aims to share the findings, sparking discussion on potential actions to address these barriers and fostering collaboration. By navigating the complex landscape of EDI in research, we recognize both progress and areas needing refinement, offering insights poised to reshape perspectives and promote a new era of inclusive practices. Highlighting specific barriers identified by researchers, the presentation will discuss strategies for overcoming challenges. The outcomes are expected to catalyze enhanced collaboration among Research and Development professionals worldwide, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable research landscape. Join us in this conversation as we collectively move towards a future where diversity and inclusion form integral components of the research endeavor.

Presented by: Dr. Sanjukta Choudhury

Dr. Sanjukta Choudhury serves as a Senior Strategist in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and Research at the University of Saskatchewan. She earned her Ph.D. in Physics from the same institution, where her doctoral work focused on developing Confocal X-ray Fluorescence Imaging techniques for Synchrotron facilities. Her postdoctoral research further deepened her expertise in synchrotron X-ray techniques, particularly in studying metals within biological systems.

Throughout her career, Dr. Choudhury has had the opportunity to collaborate on research projects across the United States, South Korea, New Zealand, and Canada. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at both national and international conferences.

Currently, Dr. Choudhury’s focus lies in university administration, where she supports and leads strategic EDI and research development initiatives. As an administrator-scholar, she is dedicated to fostering collaboration among faculty, students, and administration to create an inclusive and thriving academic environment. Her contributions have played a key role in shaping the EDI vision for the College of Education at the University of Saskatchewan, promoting both EDI and research development through joint efforts.

In her research, Dr. Choudhury leads projects that investigate the experiences of researchers incorporating EDI into their work, with funding from the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP). She also partners with institutions in New Zealand to enhance EDI competencies and is involved in a project that explores the unique challenges faced by non-traditional researchers in academia.

Dr. Choudhury’s work has been recognized with awards such as the Spirit of Kindness Award, the Project Management Award, and several research grants. In addition to her academic responsibilities, she actively participates in professional associations and volunteer activities, with a strong commitment to breaking down barriers in research and promoting inclusive practices. Her dedication to innovation continues to drive meaningful progress in both knowledge and professional practice.
