NIH is the latest data provider to impose more stringent compliance requirements in the form of NIST 800-171 attestation from researchers using DBGaP data under their Genomics Data Sharing Policy. For many researchers and their institutions this is a very big hill to climb and requires a collaborative sharing of the responsibility between IT, Compliance, Procurement, and the research teams to establish, document, and implement a host new items. Beyond just NIH other data providers are adopting a similar approach requiring the same or related compliance. The time to address these challenges is now!

This presentation will examine the NIH requirements, provide an overview of NIST 800-171, Identify areas that will typically present challenges both for the institution and for research teams. Finally presenting some of the approaches that are being employed to meet these requirements.
