AI is everywhere and with it has come hype, fear, pressure, FOMO, uncertainty, and stress. This two part series will examine where we are right now in the ever-changing AI landscape. Starting with first principles and following how we got to where we are today. The sessions will take a practical approach to provide a realistic view into the spectrum of AI right now, and how it is impacting individuals and our organizations.
Members who register and attend Part 1 and Part 2 of "AI All Over The Place: AI Foundations" will receive a CARA "AI Foundations" certificate.
Part 2:
Will attempt to answer the question "Where should my organization be with respect to AI?"
In the current landscape every organization must respond to AI in some way. The nature of that response, however will vary widely. This part will look at what organizations should be doing with respect to AI, and prioritize the must-do's out from the nice-to-have, and other possibilities. We will dive into some of the risks, including of shadow AI, over-sharing, over-agency, and lack of training; and establish a practical checklist that will keep your organization off the bleeding edge while still leveraging potential benefits and avoiding risks.
Presented by research cybersecurity, governance, risk, and compliance expert Scott Baker, these sessions will provide a foundational environmental scan and grounding in up-to-date AI issues and best-practices.

Scott Baker manages the Research Cybersecurity and Compliance team at UBC Advanced Research Computing: a group focused on supporting researchers in navigating compliance requirements and finding secure solutions for their project architectures and research data. He is a member of the program leadership committee for UBC's Privacy & Information Security Management program. He is also a member of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada national security council where he chairs the governance and policy working group.
