Marilyse Piche's speech

My fellow graduate friends, past years were extremely stressful and awkward for the whole world, but it was also for us the opportunity to start a new journey in the Research Administration field. To my knowledge, the certificate in Research Administration offered by the Mohawk College and the CARA is the only program specifically designed for the Canadian research academic environment. This online program was dynamized by enthusiastic teachers and students from diverse Canadian research institutions.

We really enjoyed the online format which enhanced interactions among us. Balancing work, family, online studies and covid was indeed facilitated. Various activities were proposed such as short or long assignment, quiz, online discussion, research grant proposal, commenting another student work, etc. Several extracurricular opportunities were offered to students such as conference on data security, equity, diversity, inclusion and budget, etc. Classmates in biology, art, architecture, anthropology, psychology, cancer etc. discussed about ethical issues, budget, project management, the increased of struggling with research fundings in Canada and the increased pressure to have better research grant proposal. We have received a great education thanks to our teacher and fine administration.

When I started this program, I was a research assistant that was hoping to gain tools and knowledge in order to improve my management skills. I didn't know exactly what to expect. I was delighted by each course! I appreciated to discuss with students from different research fields around Canada, opening my horizons. This program inspired me, it helped me to gain confidence. Lately, I decided to cross the barrier and to be on the administrative side. Indeed, I joined the Bureau de la conduite responsable en recherche at Université de Montréal and my role is to assist all the researchers at my institution. I will be forever thankful to teachers and staffs from Mohawk College that motivated me for that career improvement. Many Congratulations Class of 2022 and wishing everyone good luck for the future. We will certainly contribute to improve the research environment!
