Dr. Frances Chandler Bursary Fund

We are pleased to announce the CARA executive committee voted unanimously to name the CARA bursary fund for students in the Research Administration Certificate in honour of Past President Dr. Frances Chandler.

As a long time CARA member Fran's contribution to professional development has been exceptional - she has mentored countless new research administrators, presented several webinars and taught a course in the Research Administration Certificate. As CARA President, Fran established the partnership with Mohawk College that resulted in the development of Canada's first college certificate in research administration. The program had 12 graduates in its first year and currently has over 100 students. In stewarding the partnership, Fran prioritized academic excellence and accessibility and contributed significantly to program development.

CARA re-invests money from the partnership with Mohawk College in bursaries for our members who are advancing the profession through their studies. The association's commitment to supporting members reflects Fran’s long-time commitment and vision to have formal education in the profession. We are honoured to have her leadership and recognize the legacy of her tangible achievements by naming this fund in her honour for the next five years.

Change the Future Campaign

At CARA 2018, Josh Leslie of Stewardly founded and sponsored the Change the Future campaign by challenging CARA members to save a quarter each week until the next conference in support of bursaries for the fully online Research Administration Certificate at Mohawk College. CARA members responded with $1445 in donations at CARA 2019! Process Pathways donated another $500 and CARA made a donation in lieu of speaker gifts.

Special thanks to member Karen Mosier for her generous donation of prizes in support of the Change the Future campaign prize draw.

The campaign continues, so please join us as we aim to double the donations at CARA 2021 in St. John's!

CARA-WEST 2020 Conference

November 24 - 27, Hilton Whistler Resort, Whistler, British Columbia

Following up on the “save the date” sent on March 11, 2020, the organizing committee at Simon Fraser University is still planning to execute our Western regional conference between November 24 and 27, 2020. Our first priority is the safety of our community. Depending on the Government’s direction regarding events, and the capabilities of the venue to accommodate it, we plan on holding the conference, as planned, at the Hilton Whistler Resort in Whistler, British Columbia. If this is not deemed safe before early August, we will move to an online platform.

Our theme this year is “Research for Good”. More information about registration, programs, keynote speakers, and details will be coming in mid-August, please stay tuned.

If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact

In the interest of public safety, Brock University has made the difficult decision to postpone hosting the CARA-Ontario conference until next year. The conference was to be held in Niagara-on-the-Lake this December 2-4. Due to uncertainties around maximum numbers of people, a potential ‘second wave’ of the coronavirus, and in consultation with the hotel on all possible alternatives, we felt it was prudent to wait a year. As well, we wanted to ensure the full participation of Tri-Agency officials whose input is invaluable at a CARA conference. We are pleased to announce that Brock University will host the CARA conference at Queen’s Landing, Niagara-on-the-Lake December 8-10, 2021. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
